Day Trips from Valencia with Kids in Summer: 6 Ways to Beat the Heat
Valencia in summer is gorgeous — but let's be honest: from about eleven in the morning, the sun in the city centre really kicks in, and a little one feels it before anyone else. The good news? The city is ringed with half-day escapes that are perfect for families: pine-shaded beaches, towns a short train ride away, sunset boat trips, and castles for the older kids.
Here are six tried-and-tested summer day trips from Valencia with kids, including how to get there (many without a car, by local Cercanías train) and the tricks to keep the heat from cutting your day short.
1. La Albufera and El Palmar: a boat trip at sunset
This is the king of summer plans near Valencia for families. La Albufera is barely 20–30 minutes from the centre, and the boat trip across the lake at sunset is the kind of thing kids actually remember: still water, birds, an orange sky reflected across the rice paddies.
The trick in summer is timing. Skip midday entirely. Go in the late afternoon when the heat drops, take the boat trip, and stay for a paella in El Palmar — which happens to be exactly where the dish was born. The kids arrive tired but happy, and you skip the worst of the heat.
Getting there: a car is easiest, but there's also an EMT city bus from the centre out to El Palmar and El Saler. If you've got a stroller, even better — the path by the jetty is flat, and your little one can nap on the way back.
2. The shaded beaches of El Saler and La Devesa
If Malvarrosa feels too crowded in August, this is your alternative. Inside the Albufera Natural Park, the beaches of El Saler and La Devesa are long, fine-sand, and — best of all for a family — backed by a pine forest that gives natural shade right behind the sand.
That changes the whole day: you set up camp among the pines, your child plays protected from the midday sun, and you only head down to the water in short bursts. Far more manageable than wrestling with a parasol on a packed city beach.
Summer tip: arrive early (before 11) or mid-afternoon, bring plenty of water, and don't trust "just a little bit of sun." With babies, the shade of the pine forest is gold.
3. Cullera: beach, lighthouse and views by train
Cullera is the easiest charming beach escape from Valencia. It's on the C-1 Cercanías line (toward Gandia) and you're there in just over an hour without touching a car. Family-friendly beaches with calm water, an old town topped by a castle, and a lighthouse with sweeping views for dessert.
For a family with little kids, the ideal plan is a morning at the beach, a relaxed lunch, and back before the worst of the heat. If the older ones still have energy, the walk up to the castle and lighthouse at sunset pays off handsomely with views over the whole coastline.
Getting there: Cercanías C-1 from València Nord. Good frequency in season, but check the return times before you set off so you're not stranded with a wiped-out child.
4. Gandia: the family beach par excellence
At the far end of that same C-1 line is Gandia, home to one of the most family-friendly beaches on the entire coast: fine golden sand, a very gentle entry into the water (little ones can paddle without scares), and a promenade full of places to eat and grab a snack.
It's the classic "proper beach day" with no need for a car or parking under a blazing sun. You go by train, set everything up on the sand, and switch off.
Getting there: Cercanías C-1 all the way to Gandia (the final stop), roughly an hour. From the station there's onward transport to the beach, which sits a little apart from the town.
5. Sagunto: Romans and a castle for older kids
If you've got history-lovers at home, Sagunto is a winner: a Roman theatre and a huge castle crowning the town, just under half an hour away by train. Climbing to the top with the Mediterranean views hooks kids from a certain age.
That said, let's be straight with you: in high summer this is an early-morning or late-afternoon outing. There are slopes, steps and little shade up top. With a baby in the middle of a heatwave, it's not the best plan on this list — save it for a milder day, or go when the sun is low.
Getting there: Cercanías lines C-5 or C-6 from Valencia, around 30–40 minutes.
6. Xàtiva: castle, fountains and a historic old town
Xàtiva is the perfect "pretty town" escape to combine a stroll, some history, and a break from the bustle. It has a spectacular double castle, an old town full of fountains (much appreciated by kids in summer) and shady corners to stop and rest.
Like Sagunto, the castle means a climb and heat, so the trick is the same: wander the old town first thing, eat at your ease, and leave the top for when the sun eases off. The lower part of town is perfectly manageable with a stroller.
Getting there: Cercanías line C-2 from València Nord, around 40 minutes.
Tips so the heat doesn't ruin your day trip
Whatever the destination, in summer with kids the same three rules save the day.
- Go early or wait for the afternoon. 12:00–17:00 is for shade, naps or water. Plan anything active outside that window.
- Hydration and portable shade. Plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen and — if it's a beach day — a parasol or a patch of pine forest. A dehydrated or sunburnt child ends any outing on the spot.
- Leave room for the nap. A stroller that reclines and rides smoothly means your little one sleeps while you carry on with the plan, instead of having to stop dead. It's the difference between a perfect day and heading back mid-afternoon with everyone grumpy.
A lightweight stroller changes everything on a summer day trip
All of these escapes have something in common: there's walking, there's hopping on the train, there's hauling water and towels, and the little ones end up exhausted. A lightweight stroller — one that folds easily to get on the Cercanías and reclines for a nap — is exactly what makes a day trip enjoyable instead of draining.
And here's the catch: most families visiting Valencia don't travel with their good stroller — or the airline has left it in pieces — and end up making do with a flimsy one that fights every kerb and every platform.
At Baby Roller we bring you a premium Bugaboo Dragonfly or YoYo Babyzen stroller, clean and ready to go, straight to your hotel, your Airbnb or the airport in Valencia. Lightweight, easy to steer, one-hand fold, and just as happy on the cobbles of the old town as on a beach day in Cullera. You focus on enjoying the trip; we'll take care of the stroller.
